the terms, in plain words.
last updated 5 october 2026
these cover using hanzen and hanzen watch. by using them you agree to what's here. it's short on purpose.
what hanzen is
hanzen is a tool for learning chinese by ear, plus a chrome add-on called hanzen watch that reads along with chinese videos on youtube and bilibili. both are free to use right now.
free to use
you don't pay anything and you don't need an account. if that ever changes, we'll say so clearly on this site and in the app before it does, and nothing you've learned goes away.
fair use
use hanzen for its purpose, learning chinese. please don't:
- use hanzen for anything illegal.
- try to break, take apart or resell the app, the add-on or their content.
- copy or share the character keywords, part names or scenes, which are original content owned by hanzen.
your data
hanzen keeps your progress in your own browser on your device. optional cross-device sync is coming later. the full detail is in our privacy page.
no warranty
hanzen is provided "as is". we work hard to keep it useful and running, but we can't promise it will be free of bugs or always available. to the extent the law allows, hanzen comes without warranties of any kind.
limits on liability
to the extent the law allows, hanzen and its operator are not liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of the product.
other people's services
hanzen watch works on youtube and bilibili but is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to youtube, google or bilibili. dictionary data comes from open sources, credited inside the app.
changes
we may update these terms. we'll change the date at the top and, for a big change, do our best to say so. we may block use that breaks these terms.
governing law
these terms are governed by the laws of the united states and the operator's home state, without regard to conflict-of-law rules.
